Speeding over the water at approximately 70 km per hour (43.5 mph on their bare feet, barefoot water skiers perform spectacular tricks, and jump over the ramp as far as 26 meters.
A tournament includes three disciplines: slalom, tricks and jump.
In the Slalom event, the skier has to cross the wake of the boat as many times as possible in 15 seconds, once pass going forward, one going backwards. During both passes, the skier tries to cross the wake of the boat as many times possible within the 15 seconds. Each crossing earns him half a point for a crossing on two feet, and one full point for a crossing on only one foot.
The challenge of the discipline Trick is to perform as many tricks as possible in two passes of 15 seconds each. The more complex the trick, the more point the skier earns.
Among the more spectacular and complex tricks are flips, turns on two feet, turns on one foot, turns with no hands on the handle and one foot in the toe strap, turns with a step over the line, and tumble-turns. Depending on the degree of difficulty, a barefoot water ski trick is rewarded with between 10 and 1850 points.
Jumping is probably the most spectacular discipline of the three. With a maximum speed of 72 km/h (44.7 mph), the skiers jump over a ramp made of very slick fiberglass. The jump is 45,5cm high and 210cm long. The most spectacular jump style is the so-called “inverted” style, where the skier lets his legs trail behind his torso in “inverted” position like Superman flying through the air, and pulls them back into forward position just before the landing. Each skierhas three jumps, and the longest jump is scored. |
